Top Five NJCAA Football Teams Post Impressive Wins to Remain atop NJCAA / JC Football.com Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS - This week's top five of the NJCAA / JC Football.com Poll remains unchanged as those top teams dominated the weekend with impressive victories, including three of the top five teams shutting out their opponents.

For the fourth consecutive week, Navarro College (Texas) remains No. 1 with a 7-0 overall record. The Bulldogs again received 140 total points and all seven first place votes.

Navarro is once again followed by Snow College (Utah) at No. 2 and Butler Community College (Kan.) at No. 3, Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) at No. 4 and Georgia Military College at No. 5.

Navarro, who was without several key players due to injury, defeated conference foe Cisco Junior College (Texas) 31-6 to improve to 7-0 overall. The Bulldog defense allowed just 260 yards of total offense and recorded six sacks. The victory guarantees Navarro a spot in the Southwest JC Football Conference playoffs, which takes the top four teams in the eight-member league and begins Nov. 8.

The Bulldogs have been one of the most consistent teams in the country this season averaging 35 points a game while allowing just 14 from their opponents. They boast the nation's third best offense (419.5 total yards/game) and have a top 30 defense (291.5 total yards/game).

Navarro next hosts Arkansas Baptist College on Oct. 25 before their much anticipated showdown at No. 6 Blinn College (Texas) on Nov. 1.

Snow had no problem with Pima Community College (Ariz.) last weekend as they pounded the Aztecs 71-0. The Badger defense allowed just 77 total yards from the Aztecs and forced two interceptions, a fumble and recorded five sacks.

The star of the game for Snow was sophomore defensive back Jordan Brown who intercepted two Pima passes, returning both for touchdowns, including one for 98 yards when Pima was threatening to score.

Like Navarro, Snow has also been a very consistent football team this year. They have the nation's ninth-best offense (402.6 total yards/game) along with the sixth-best defense (202.8 total yards/game).

The win over Pima makes the Badgers 8-0 heading into their bye week. Their next contest is a big one as they travel to No. 18 Eastern Arizona College on Nov. 1. Coming off a bye week, the Butler Grizzlies returned to late season form as they blanked Independence Community College (Kan.) 68-0. Butler was able to score 10 touchdowns in the contest; seven offensive scores to go along with a pair of special teams touchdowns and a defensive touchdown. The Grizzlies led 27-0 after the first quarter and 48-0 at halftime.

Wide receiver Tyrece Gaines posted a game-high 166 receiving yards on five catches and scored on plays of 80 and 65 yards. Quarterback Press Taylor finished the day completing 12 of 14 passes for 258 yards and four touchdowns. Both did not play in the second half.

Butler will next host Highland Community College (Kan.) on Oct. 25 before their season ending match-up against No. 4 Fort Scott Community College (Kan.) on Nov. 1. Just like the Navarro-Blinn contest on the same date, the Grizzlies and Greyhounds will be battling not only for their conference titles but possibly for a chance at a national title.

Speaking of Fort Scott...the Greyhounds posted their fourth consecutive shutout with a 39-0 victory over Highland last Saturday. The last team to score on the 'Hounds was Garden City way back on Sept. 20, in a game Fort Scott won 31-24. Since then, the Greyhounds, now 8-0, have not allowed an opponent to score in 242 minutes and 9 seconds of game action.

To no surprise, the Greyhounds rank 11th in total defense (230.5 total yards/game) in the NJCAA. Linebacker LeVonte David ranks in the top 20 in total tackles with 71stops.

The Greyhounds, who are in first place in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference with a 6-0 league mark, next host Air Force Prep before the big match-up with No. 3 Butler in two weeks.

Georgia Military had to travel over 1,000 miles to get their sixth win of the season. The Bulldogs navigated north to Nassau Community College (N.Y.) this past Saturday and defeated the Lions 21-13.

The game turned out to be a defensive struggle although GMC controlled the first half and posted a 14-7 halftime lead. Jakar Hamilton saved the day for the Bulldogs in the second half as he scooped up a muffed punt and returned it inside the Nassau five-yard line. A few plays later running back Steve Robinson punched it in for the Bulldogs to seal the win.

GMC will next host Louisburg College (N.C.) on Oct. 25.
